Gentrification:What is it?

There are some misconceptions about gentrification. One these misconceptions is that only white, wealthy people can cause gentrification, this is not true. Gentrification is caused when wealthier people start to move into lower income communities (PBS,2013). Gentrification can also mean the rise in rent and property value and change of character and "culture" of the community by outside forces (PBS,2013). When the word, gentrification, is used it always has a negative connotation. It usually applies to the displacement of poor people in their own community by "rich outsiders"(PBS,2013). Gentrification has been an ongoing problem for decades and still is a "problem" to this day. The reason why gentrification has survived for many years is because not everyone sees it as a problem. They are those that think that gentrification is a great and a necessary change and choose ignore the awful aspect about it. Gentrification has a lot of good aspects mixed in with the bad, making the solution even harder to find. This is a major problem because people tend to choose to only notice the benefit that it can yield and not the risk of kicking people out of their own homes with nowhere to go (PBS,2013). Unfortunately, it ends up with the "rich outsiders" reaping all the benefit and enjoyment of the "good" while others become "victims of their own success"(PBS ,2013).

TOMPKINS SQUARE PARK

Gentrification is not necessarily a bad thing, but in the latter half of the 20th century it has become something much different, it has turned into a real estate business. There have been cases that people riot because they begin to notice that gentrification was underway. Living in a community that is a next target for gentrification, I wonder if the community is just as aroused as the protesters back then. Like Tompkins Square Park and Bushwick, Hunts Point is beginning to see new business and new people flowing into the community.
